Synopsis
In From Sisal Fiber to Agave Ethanol , director, screenwriter, and narrator Paulo Marcos investigates a pivotal moment in the semi-arid region of Bahia: the transition between the traditional sisal economy and the biotechnological potential of agave as a clean energy source.
Filmed between 2024 and 2025 in Conceição do Coité, Bahia, with additional footage shot in the United States, the documentary connects the field to research laboratories, revealing how a plant historically associated with fiber can inaugurate a new productive cycle based on the bioeconomy.
By bringing together workers like José de Araújo, an engine owner, rural producers, political leaders, industrial representatives, and scientists from Unicamp's BRAVE Program, the film constructs a narrative that traverses tradition, science, and regional development. Without breaking with the memory of the fiber that sustained generations, the work proposes a reflection on innovation, public policies, and the future of energy, showing that the Sertão region is not only a territory of resistance but also of reinvention.
